Dropped $300 on a 'repaired' server from eBay that died in 2 days
I bought a used Dell PowerEdge R630 from a seller with good ratings, thinking I was getting a deal for my home lab. After setting it up and running fine for 48 hours, the PSU started smoking and the board went dead. Anyone else get burned by buying secondhand enterprise gear from sketchy listings?

that eBay "certified" stuff is such a joke, half the time they just spray paint over the damage and pray it holds. I got a "refurbished" R730 that had a bent pin on the CPU socket they clearly missed, fried my Xeon the second I powered it up. you gotta start asking sellers for the service tag before you buy so you can pull the original warranty history on Dell's site, saved my ass a few times.

Damn that sucks man, I feel for you. I've had similar bad luck with "recertified" enterprise gear off eBay before, it's a gamble for sure. A smoking PSU is scary though, at least you caught it before it could take out anything else in your setup. Did you check if the seller has any kind of warranty or return policy? Sometimes those eBay sellers will try to weasel out of it but it's worth pushing back. Hope you can get your money back or at least a partial refund, that's a brutal loss for a home lab.
