Fixed a dead PC with a $4 part after swapping 3 power supplies for nothing
Client brought in a desktop that wouldn't turn on at all. No lights, no fans, totally dead. I figured it was the power supply, so I swapped in a known good one. Nothing. Swapped a second one. Still nothing. Third one. Same deal. I'm sitting there in my shop in Mesa feeling like an idiot, about to tell the guy his motherboard was toast. Then I pulled the little CMOS battery out just to check the voltage on a hunch, and it read 0.4 volts. The board was so dead it wouldn't even post a standby signal. Dropped in a fresh CR2032 from the drawer, hit the button, and it fired right up. Learned that a dead coin cell can make a board act completely bricked, and now it's the first thing I check before I touch anything else. Anyone else get burned by a battery that should've been the obvious call?
