Serious question, cheap UPS or a decent surge strip for a client's $900 workstation in Dayton
Had a client in Dayton call me about a workstation they use for CAD, about $900 in parts, and their power flickers a few times a month. I had to pick between a $60 surge strip or a $150 UPS, and I went with the UPS after checking their outlet voltage with a multimeter and seeing it drop to 104v during a brownout. The install took maybe 20 minutes, but I had to explain to the owner why a surge strip would not keep his machine on when the lights blink. Three months in, the UPS has kicked over six times and logged every event in its software. His saved files have not corrupted once since the swap. I still keep a couple surge strips in the van, but I am starting to think most techs skip the UPS because of price, not because it is overkill. Anyone here had a client push back on a UPS, and how did you justify the cost to them?
