Dug out my grandpa's old mag float after 15 years, thing beats my expensive one
Been finishing flatwork for about 20 years now. Always used the newer magnesium floats with the comfy handles, thought old tools were garbage. Last month I was doing a 60 yard driveway in Tacoma and dropped my float in the wet mix, ruined it. Grabbed my grandfather's float from his basement, one of those heavy steel ones with the wood handle, figured better than nothing. Man that thing worked the cream like a champ. Got the surface glassy smooth, no drag marks at all. Maybe the weight does the work for you. Been using it on every job since. Any of you guys still run old school tools over the new stuff? What else am I missing out on?
Honestly the old magnesium floats hit different, my uncle gave me his from the 80s and I swear it finishes better than the new one I paid 90 bucks for. The weight really does do the work and the wood handle doesn't slip when your hands are sweaty. Tbh I've been hunting flea markets for old finishing tools ever since.
