Rant: a kid on my crew asked why I still tap forms with a hammer, and it got me thinking about how I learned | Concrete Finishers - The Design Community Hub
Next thing you know the kid will want an app to tell him which end of the hammer to hold. I learned the same way you did, somebody handed me tools and said figure it out, and tapping forms by hand teaches you to FEEL when something is set right instead of just trusting a light or a screen. Half the young guys on crews today can run a fancy tool but couldn't tell you WHY it works, which is gonna bite them later when the tool dies and the job still needs doing. It's not about being old school for the sake of it either, some methods stick around because they WORK. Kid asking questions is a good sign though, better than the ones who just nod and never wonder about anything.
