Appreciation post: the $4 flip phone that saved my slab pour last Thursday
My smartphone died in the rain around 6am last Thursday right as we were setting up a 400 yard pour on the Maple Street job, and I had no way to reach the pump operator or the ready mix dispatcher. Dug my old flip phone out of the truck glovebox, charged it off the dash for ten minutes, and it made every call I needed without a single dropped signal. What backup gear do you all keep in the truck for days when your main phone quits on you?
Six months ago I would've told you a flip phone in the truck was just junk taking up space in the glovebox. My old LG sat in there for two years and I almost tossed it during spring cleaning. Then we had a pour out on County Road 9 where my iPhone screen went black in the cold and I couldn't pull up the batch ticket info for the driver. That flip phone made three calls that morning and got us back on track. Now it stays charged and I don't leave the yard without it.
