Noticed a reused beam in a 1920s warehouse in Portland and felt dumb
Tbh I walked through a renovation last month and saw a steel I-beam stamped 1923 still holding up a new mezzanine, so why do I keep buying new lumber for temporary shoring when the old stuff has already proven itself?

Reusing old beams is cool and all but there's a reason they stopped stamping them with dates, nobody was checking after a while. A beam from 1923 could be totally fine or it could be full of hidden cracks from a hundred years of load shifts, you just don't know without testing. Buying new lumber for temp shoring isn't stupid, it's predictable, you know exactly what you're getting and your insurance guy won't give you a hard time. The old stuff proving itself once doesn't mean it'll prove itself every time, and if it fails you're the one standing under it.
