Warning: Don't skip checking referral requirements before applying

My buddy Marcus literally just went through this same thing. He spent three weeks cold applying to a marketing firm downtown, only to find out his college roommate's girlfriend worked there and could have gotten him a $750 referral bonus. He ended up messaging her on LinkedIn and she was totally cool about it, set him up with a direct line to the hiring manager. Now he's got an interview next Tuesday, so it's definitely worth asking strangers if you approach them right. Just be polite and don't be pushy about it.

Stopped by that old brickyard in St. Louis last week

Used a bunch of old Chicago common bricks on a patio job a few years back. They looked amazing once they were laid, all those little imperfections and color variations gave it way more character than new bricks ever could. The real hassle was sorting through them, had to toss out maybe a quarter of them that were too crumbly or chipped up to use. Took way longer than using fresh material but the homeowner still brags about it, so I'd say worth the extra work if you've got the patience.

Appreciation post: I thought the ultrasonic cleaning trick for clogged fuel nozzles was just a gimmick until I tried it on a Cessna 172 last month

Right? My grandpa fixed everything with a hammer and some baling wire. Now they'd tell you to order a special titanium bracket online and wait two weeks. The old ways just cut through the nonsense.

Overheard a guy at a coffee shop say 'every studio is just a vibe with a laptop'

Yeah "looked great but produced nothing special" hits hard. I've walked into studios that cost more than my car and felt like a museum. You're too scared to touch anything. Meanwhile my buddy's basement setup with a busted chair and an interface held together with tape has made three albums I actually listen to on repeat. The gear doesn't write the songs. If the vibe is off you're just staring at blinking lights. I'd take a cramped room with good energy over a pristine control room any day.

Shoutout to the guy at the lumber yard who told me to soak my cedar fence pickets overnight before staining them.

That trick works for pressure-treated wood too.
