Unpopular opinion: your daily log is the cheapest insurance you'll ever write
Heard two guys on a KC job argue for 20 minutes about whether a wall got waterproofed before or after a Tuesday rain, and nobody had a single note to prove it. I started keeping a 3 line log on every job after watching a $22,000 change order get denied because we couldn't show when the delay started. Six weeks in, the difference is night and day: my super can pull up any date and see crew counts, weather, and what got inspected. Every day you skip the log is a day you're handing the other side a free win. You don't need software either, a $2 notebook and a pen works fine if you actually fill it out. What's in your log today, or are you still trusting your memory on a job from 3 weeks back?
What made you pick a notebook over your phone? Not trying to start a fight on it, just curious. I've seen guys try the notes app and stop after two weeks because they hate typing with gloves on. The paper log people seem to stick with it longer, mostly because it lives in the truck and takes ten seconds. But what do you do when the notebook gets rained on or left at the shop? Do you snap a photo of the page each night as a backup, or just trust the paper?
