DAE get told by an inspector in Portland that your container corners need a 3/8 inch plate or no stamp?
Had a guy named Rick from Multnomah County walk my 40ft high cube build last week and he flat out refused to sign off unless I welded 3/8 inch plate at every corner casting. I argued for 20 minutes that the container came engineered that way from the factory, and he just said "son, I don't care where it came from, I care what happens when it's sitting on your gravel pad in a windstorm." Cost me $340 in steel and a weekend of grinding, but honestly the whole frame feels stiffer now. Anyone else get surprised by a local inspector adding stuff that wasn't in the plans?
Man, Rick sounds like every county inspector I've ever met. Here's the deal, that 3/8 plate trick is an old workaround guys use when they don't want to pull the engineering paperwork on corner castings. Next time ask for the code section in writing before you buy steel, because half these guys are going off habit and not the book. If he can't point to the actual rule, you can push back or ask for his supervisor. That said, you're not wrong about the frame feeling stiffer, plenty of guys plate the corners anyway just for peace of mind. Keep Rick's number though, an inspector who actually shows up and looks at stuff is worth more than one who rubber stamps it.
