Vent: I welded my container frame straight to the corner castings and found out 8 months later why that's a problem
Honestly I felt like a genius when I did it. Skipped the whole separate steel frame thing, saved about $1,900, and the box felt rock solid. Then last Tuesday a guy who inspects boxes for a living walked my build in Tucson and pointed at one corner without saying anything for a while. What he showed me is that those castings are meant to take loads from the corners only, and when you weld a frame across them you lock in stress that shows up as cracks later. Mine had a hairline crack starting at the top weld on the ocean side corner, which he said is where it always starts because of how the box flexes in heat. He also mentioned that if I ever want to move it or sell it, no one will touch a box with a welded frame because the castings are how you lift and stack them. Tbh I never thought about the box needing to move again. If you're framing yours right now, please look at how you're tying into those corners before you burn anything in. Has anyone here had to cut a frame back off a casting, and how bad was it?
Idk if it's really true that nobody will touch it, the castings still work for lifting as long as the welds aren't on the twist lock holes or the top face. Mine got cut off with a grinder and it took a whole weekend but the casting was fine after.
