I finally stopped dead lifting loads after a near miss at the Port of Houston
I was swinging a 12,000 lb pipe section over a crew at the Port of Houston last month when a gust shifted it about 4 feet sideways, and now I always keep a tag line on anything over 5 tons, does anyone else have a wind speed limit they just won't work past?
That four feet sideways is a good reminder that wind does not care how much experience you have. I see the same thing on my drive home, people tailgating at 70 in a downpour like the laws of physics take the day off. A gust or a slick road does not announce itself, it just shows up, so the tag line is smart. We keep a 20 mph limit on picks and shut down at 25, and honestly the days we lose are cheaper than the one we might not walk away from.
