That moment my outrigger pad sank 6 inches into soft ground on a job in Austin
Was setting up for a 10-ton pick on a residential lot last Thursday and the pad just disappeared into the dirt, so I had to scramble for some old 2x12s from the truck and double-stack them before I could even think about lifting.

Austin dirt is NO joke man. I've had pads sink on me there too, especially after those heavy rains. Double stacking lumber is the only way to go on those soft lots sometimes.

Did you try talking to the dirt and asking it nicely to hold your pad up? Because that sounds like exactly the kind of move Austin dirt would pull just to mess with you. Around here we call that "engineer approved soil" since it looks solid until you put real weight on it. Good thing you had those 2x12s on hand, I've seen guys have to use entire sheets of plywood just to spread the load enough. Honestly on some lots you'd be better off setting up on a stack of old tires from the dump.
