The old Grove City job changed how I set up my luffing jib
Back in March we had a tight spot over on 5th and Main in Grove City, had to lift HVAC units onto a roof with like 12 feet of clearance to the neighboring building. I always ran my luffing jib at the factory default angle, figured it was fine. But that day the operator I was with, he had me drop it way flatter, like 15 degrees lower than I ever would've tried. The swing radius shrank so much that we could spin the load right over a parked dumpster and a fence without touching anything. Timing went from a 40 minute pick to maybe 12 minutes for each unit. Since then I've been messing with the jib angle on every setup, checking the charts more carefully instead of just eyeballing it. Seems obvious now but I'd been losing time on tight jobs for years without even knowing it. Has anyone else had a specific job that made them change their default rigging setup? I'm curious if I'm the only one who got stuck in a routine like that.

Yeah that's a solid point about the jib angle but I gotta say, the crane's load charts don't always tell the whole story when you're working in tight spots. I've seen guys drop the jib too far and then wonder why their capacity numbers look completely different than what they expected. That 15 degrees can change your lifting radius more than you think, even if the chart says it's fine on paper. We had a similar situation in Columbus last month and my operator kept saying it was good based on the chart numbers, but the real clearance issues were all about the counterweight swing, not just the jib. So yeah, messing with the angle helps but you gotta watch the whole picture, not just one adjustment.
