Our studio lost power for 9 hours on deadline day and the backup drive was sitting in a drawer at home
Last Wednesday was supposed to be the easy day. We had one client animation due at 6pm, a project we'd been chipping at for three weeks, and I figured I'd render it by lunch and spend the afternoon cleaning up old project files. Around 10:15am the lights flickered twice and everything went dead, and our whole street in Bakersfield was out from a blown transformer. The building has no generator, which we all knew, but nobody panicked because the plan was always to grab the backup drive and finish at the coffee shop down the block. Except the drive was in my kitchen drawer at home, 25 minutes away, and the render was only half exported. I sat in the dark for about 4 hours refreshing the utility outage map on my phone like it was going to suddenly say 'just kidding.' We sent the client a 'minor technical issue' email and they were cool about it, but I still felt like a total amateur. Power came back at 7:40pm and I finished the export in 20 minutes, sitting in my car in the parking lot with a laptop on my knees. So what's your actual backup setup look like, because clearly mine is 'hope nothing ever happens' and I need to fix that.
