PSA: Most studio monitors are placed way too close to the wall

Went into a friend's recording studio in Nashville last week and realized his KRK monitors were about 3 inches from the back wall. Pulled up a room mode calculator on my phone and showed him the bass buildup at that distance was around 12 dB in the low end. He moved them out to 18 inches and the mix translated way better to his car speakers. Has anyone else tested monitor placement with a measurement mic and been shocked at the difference?

You ever had a buddy tell you his mixes sounded like mud and you just laughed? My friend in Austin had his Yamahas practically kissing the wall for two years before he moved them out a foot and suddenly his low end didn't sound like a broken subwoofer anymore. That measurement mic stuff is real, I saw his face when the waterfall plot showed all that bass fighting itself.

Did he try pulling them out further than a foot or did that fix it enough?
