TIL: A sign painter in Baltimore looked at my logo for 2 seconds and asked why the S was bigger than the other letters
I used to draw my logos by eye in my sketchbook and never measured anything, I thought uneven letters were just my style. About a year ago I was at a small lettering meetup in Baltimore and showed my sketchbook to this older sign painter who had been doing gold leaf for like 30 years. He didn't say much, just put his thumb over the S in my logo and said "now look at it." The whole thing fell apart, letters were different heights, the spacing was all over the place, and one curve was way fatter than the others. I felt dumb but he showed me how to build a grid on tracing paper first and work from that. It took me maybe 3 weeks to get fast with the grid and honestly my work looks 10 times cleaner now. Any of you build a base structure before you draw, or do you just wing it and fix it later?
