My brother said pure CSS drawings were useless, then he saw me make a working clock with one div
Six months ago my brother watched me build a CSS-only landscape for a CodePen challenge and said it was a waste of time because real devs just use images. I get where that comes from. If you need a photo of a mountain, a PNG does it in two seconds and nobody on the team has to maintain it. But then I tried a different thing. I made a working analog clock in pure CSS with one div and a handful of keyframes, and it actually keeps time, no JavaScript, no SVG, and it came in under 2 KB. That is the part that got him. It is not about replacing photos. It is about stuff that has to resize, change color on hover, or scale cleanly on a 4K monitor. His take is that CSS art is a party trick that falls apart the second a browser update lands, and honestly, he is not totally wrong, I have had gradients break on me before. So where do you all land? Is pure CSS art a real skill worth putting on a resume, or is it just a fun puzzle that has no place in a production project?
