The stranger who redrew my box-shadow butterfly in 40 seconds

Saw a guy at a coffee shop in Seattle watching me fiddle with a 12 layer box-shadow butterfly. He came over and said, "you're overthinking the math, use one div and a pseudo element." Then he typed out a 20 line snippet on my laptop. My butterfly looked crisper than anything I'd made in 3 hours. I still don't fully get how he nested the shadows, but I rebuilt it from memory twice since. Does anyone else ever get schooled by someone who just sees CSS differently?
