I kept fighting with floats and clearfix hacks on my blog layout for like 8 weeks. Every time I added a widget to the sidebar, the main content would jump around. One night I was reading the MDN page on grid-template-areas and it hit me. I was building a whole column system with float: left when grid could just do it in 4 lines. I rewrote the layout last Tuesday at 1am. The sidebar stays put now. Even when I drop in a long ad block, the main text column doesn't shift a pixel. I felt pretty dumb. Has anyone else caught themselves forcing an old tool into a job that grid was built for?
Floats still have their place for things wrapping around images inside a single block of text, so grid isn't always the answer. But yeah, building a full page layout on floats in 2024 is just asking for trouble.
