A designer in my Slack told me my hover effect was doing too much, and she was right
I built this little card grid for a client's bakery site in Portland and I was pretty proud of it. On hover the cards lifted 8px, the image zoomed to 1.1, a shadow faded in, and the border color shifted. My teammate stared at it for maybe 10 seconds and typed "pick one thing." So I cut it down to just the lift, and honestly the whole page feels calmer now. Turns out four animations at 200ms each just makes it look like the layout has the shakes. Has anyone else had a hover state that they defended way too long before someone called it out?
Four animations on ONE hover state is wild and you defended that? I get being proud of your work but four things fighting for attention at once sounds less like a nice card and more like a tiny fireworks show. Cutting it to just the lift was the right call, one clear move always reads better than a pile of little ones.
