Paid a guy $180 to speed up my site, he broke the whole layout instead
So back in March I hired this freelancer off a Facebook group to fix my slow WordPress site. He charged $180 flat and promised faster load times in 48 hours. First thing he did was shove every image through this aggressive compressor plugin that crushed everything down to like 12kb. Photos turned into blocky mush, my logo went blurry, and the hero image looked like a bad JPEG from 2004. Then he minified all the CSS with some tool that broke my media queries. Desktop looked fine but on my phone the menu stacked sideways and half the text ran off the screen. I did not notice for 5 days because I mostly check my site on my laptop. A customer emailed me asking why my hours were cut off on mobile and that is when I checked. Took my old host's backup from 2 weeks before, so I lost every edit I made in that window too. Anybody got a rule for telling a cheap fix guy from a real one before they hand over the login?

That gut punch of losing two weeks of edits hurts worse than the blurry logo honestly.
