Why I'll take a plain 3 pixel blue focus ring over a fancy 400ms glow on any form
Everyone on here loves to clown on ugly default focus outlines, but I think that hate is misplaced. I was helping my aunt set up a donation page for her church in Toledo back in January, and the theme she picked had a smooth 400ms glow plus a fade up on every field. On her old laptop with spotty wifi, that thing felt like it was stuck loading, and two older folks at the church just gave up mid form because they couldn't tell where they were. I swapped it for a hard 3px blue outline with zero animation and the drop off rate on that page went from about 9 people quitting to 2. The flashy version won some design nod online but the plain one got the job done for actual users. I keep seeing posts saying transitions make forms feel alive, and sure, on a fast phone with fiber they do. But most people filling out a church donation form are on a 6 year old device in a kitchen with bad signal, and delay just reads as broken to them. Anyone else had a plain ugly fix beat the pretty one on a real site? What did you end up keeping?
