Got hit with a $400 charge from a fake McAfee popup last month
I was browsing on my phone and a popup said my phone had 3 viruses with a countdown timer, so I panicked and typed in my card info to "clean" it. Turns out it was just a browser popup and I had to call my bank in Austin to dispute the charge. What's the easiest way to check if a popup is fake before I click anything?

Real websites and real virus warnings never ask for your card info, that's the whole tell right there. If a popup wants money to fix something, it's a scam, full stop. Also those countdown timers are just there to make you panic so you don't stop and think. Best move is to close the whole browser tab, or if it won't close, force quit the browser and reopen it. Sounds like your bank hooked you up though, glad you got that sorted.
