Got scammed by a fake antivirus popup and lost $180, my fault or theirs?
Two weeks ago I was on my laptop at a coffee shop in Portland and a popup said my computer had 5 viruses, so I clicked it and paid $180 for some program called "TotalSecure Shield" that did nothing but slow everything down. I know I should have known better, but the popup looked exactly like a Windows alert and it had a timer counting down, so I panicked. My friend says anyone with half a brain knows those popups are fake and the real tip is to just close the browser, but I think companies should be forced to make those scams harder to fall for in the first place. So where do you land, is this a user problem or should we be angling for more regulation and takedowns? Also if you have a real free tool you trust for scanning, drop it below because I am not paying for anything again.
