Password manager or the same password everywhere, I picked wrong for 9 years and got burned in Baltimore
So for the longest time I had one password I used for everything. Email, bank, streaming, pizza app, all the same thing with a number tacked on the end when a site made me change it. I knew it was dumb but I figured who cares, I'm not a bank, nobody wants my stuff. Then about 5 months ago I got an email on a Tuesday morning saying my credit card had a charge on it from a gas station in Baltimore that I have never been to. Turns out one of those little shopping sites I signed up for got hacked back in 2019 and my login was just sitting in some file online. The thief tried my email and that same password on like 40 other sites and a few of them let him right in. I spent the next 3 weekends changing passwords on everything, which was way more work than just setting up a manager in the first place. Now I use one of those apps that makes up a random password for every site and I only have to remember one master phrase. The part that got me was how fast it all happened, like the whole mess came from one old login I forgot even existed. Has anyone else had a breach traced back to a site they barely remember signing up for?
