A UI designer in Austin told me to never use pure black in dark mode, and after 3 failed builds I finally get it
I used to set every dark theme background to #000000 because it looked so clean on my monitor. A UI designer I met at a meetup in Austin last spring said to try #121212 instead and I rolled my eyes at first. My first two builds with pure black got the same complaint from 4 testers: text felt like it was floating and the whole app looked harsh at night. On the third build I switched to #121212 for the base and #1E1E1E for cards, and those same testers said it felt way easier on the eyes. Turns out pure black makes the contrast against white text so strong that it almost vibrates on OLED screens. Now I keep a tiny gray scale chart taped to my desk so I stop reaching for #000. What base gray do you all use, or does it depend on the app?
