Hot take: a guy at the Amtrak station in Chicago made me ditch pure black backgrounds for good
I was on the 7 hour ride back from Chicago last month and the guy next to me had his phone brightness cranked on a pure black settings screen, and I could see every smudge and speck of dust on his screen from two seats away. I had always built my dark themes on straight #000000 because it looks clean in a mockup, but watching that screen in real daylight made me realize pure black makes fingerprints glow like a crime scene. He noticed me staring and said he hated how the black made the screen look greasy all the time. I went home and rebuilt my whole app around #121212 for the base with #1E1E1E cards, and the difference in how it wears during the day is not small. My eyes also stopped hurting after an hour of use, which I never connected to the pure black before. Now I keep a layer of lighter gray for anything that sits on top. Has anyone else had a screen just look nasty in real light and switch their base color because of it?
