My old design lead told me pure black backgrounds were amateur hour, and I nodded along for 2 years
Honestly I used to preach that #000000 was a rookie move. A former lead at a studio in Portland sat me down back in 2021 and said real designers never use pure black, always go charcoal like #121212 because pure black causes smearing on OLED and harsh halos around white text. So I repeated that line in every review for two years. Then I built a reading app for my sister and tested it on her cheap Android tablet at 2am, and the #121212 version looked washed out and gray, almost muddy next to her system UI. I flipped the background to true black, bumped the text to like #E8E8E8 instead of white, and the halos mostly vanished because the text was not full white anymore. Turns out the smearing thing is real on some panels but it was never the giant deal I made it out to be, and the muddy look bothered way more people than the smearing did. So now I test both on actual devices before I open my mouth in a critique. Anybody else find that the pure black vs charcoal rule depends way more on the screen than the design?
