Rant: A print shop in Austin quoted me 3 cents a page for 500 booklets and the fine print almost ate me alive
I was getting quotes for a run of 500 saddle stitched booklets last week and one shop in Austin came back at 3 cents a page, which sounded too good to be true. Turns out that number only covered the inside pages and the cover was billed as a separate job at a different rate. Then there was a $45 plate fee per page and a $75 setup charge they never mentioned on the phone. By the time I added it all up with 28 pages plus cover, the real cost was closer to $1.85 per booklet. I asked the guy to walk me through the line items and he got weirdly quiet when I pointed out the cover was double counted. Has anyone else run into shops that quote per page but hide the cover and plate costs, and how do you get them to give you a real number up front?
