Open floor plans vs defined rooms - which actually sells better with buyers right now?

I used to swear by knocking down walls for that open concept look but after a client told me straight up they couldn't figure out where to put their dining table in a 1,200 sq ft shell I started wondering if I've been pushing the wrong layout this whole time, anyone else noticing buyers asking for more separate spaces lately?

Is it just me or are people finally getting tired of eating dinner next to their own microwave? I totally get what you're saying @jennifer_fisher about the china cabinet thing. I showed a house last week where the kitchen, dining, and living room were all one big rectangle and the buyer just stood there with their arms crossed looking lost. Maybe we oversold the whole "open concept" thing a bit too hard these past few years.

Oh man I feel this so hard. I had a couple last month walk into a beautifully opened up ranch and the wife literally said "where would I even put my china cabinet?" and I was just standing there like... yep. Now I'm starting to think maybe we went too far with the sledgehammers because some people really do want a defined dining space and a kitchen that feels like a kitchen not part of a giant loft.
