Pro tip: I used to think open shelving was the only way to go for a modern kitchen
We did a full kitchen gut job in our 1920s house last year, and I insisted on open shelves over upper cabinets for that 'airy' look everyone posts about. After six months of dusting every dish and feeling like the room always looked messy, we spent $2,500 to install simple shaker-style cabinets instead. Has anyone else switched back from open shelving after trying it?

Yeah... that "airy" look is mostly just pictures of kitchens nobody actually cooks in. My sister did the same thing and her fancy plates just became greasy dust collectors.

Honestly greasy dust collectors is the perfect way to put it. Tbh I can't believe your sister actually used those plates for eating. That whole look just seems like a huge trap for anyone who uses their stove more than twice a month. Ngl the idea of sticky shelves from cooking fumes is actually kind of nasty when you think about it. Just seems like a ton of extra cleaning for no real payoff.
