That backsplash ripple I didn't see until the grout was down

I was doing a kitchen reno in Austin last week and spent 3 hours setting subway tile in a herringbone pattern. Looked perfect in the moment, but once the grout dried overnight, the tile lippage was everywhere. My cheap level lied to me or I was just rushing before lunch. I had to chip out about 40 tiles and reset them with a rubber mallet and shims. Took an extra 6 hours, but the homeowner never noticed because I fixed it before she came back from Dallas. Anyone else had a pattern look flat under work lights but show every flaw in daylight?
