Update: painted my brick fireplace white and the room got darker, here is what fixed it
I painted over the red brick on our fireplace last month with two coats of white masonry paint because the red was dating the living room. After it dried, the whole space somehow felt dim and flat, which made no sense to me. Turns out the brick was soaking up light before and bouncing it around, and flat white paint just killed that bounce. I added a $40 dimmable bulb in the lamp next to it and a light gray wash over the white to bring some depth back, and now it actually looks like a real fireplace again. Did anyone else run into this after painting brick, and did you go with a wash, a glaze, or just better lighting?
