A design critique made me rethink white space after 2 years of filling everything

I used to pack every corner of my layouts with boxes, borders, and extra icons because empty areas felt like failure. Then last Tuesday I watched a senior designer review a beginner's poster and she just said 'let the margins breathe' while pointing at a huge blank strip. It hit me that white space isn't wasted, it's the frame that makes the content pop. I went back to a client project for a local bakery in Portland and cut out about 40% of the decorative elements. The owner actually said it looked cleaner and more professional, which I never expected. Now I'm trying to unlearn that habit of filling gaps, but it's tough. Has anyone else struggled with feeling like empty space means you didn't do enough work?

Wow, that bakery client reaction is a solid proof point, so how do you stop yourself from reaching for those filler icons when you're mid-design now? Is it like a mental timer you set, or do you literally have to walk away from the screen first?
