My mentor said use 3 fonts max, I thought he was nuts, he was right

A few months back my buddy Dave, who runs a print shop in Cleveland, told me to stick to like 3 fonts per layout. I figured that was way too boring, so I went wild with 6 different typefaces on a flyer for my sister's yard sale. It looked like a ransom note and nobody could read the times or the address. I redid it with just a bold sans for headings, a clean serif for body, and one accent font for the price tags. Night and day difference, took me maybe 20 minutes to fix. Has anyone else had to learn this lesson the hard way or is it just me?
