That graphic designer in Columbus made me rethink my color palette

I was at a coffee shop last Tuesday and this guy at the next table was doing logo sketches. He looked over and said my laptop wallpaper (which I made) had too many similar hues. He showed me how pulling one accent color from a photo I took made the whole thing pop. I've been picking colors by feel for months and now I'm trying to start with a photo instead. Does anyone else use photos as a starting point for palettes, or is that too limiting?

Stick with photos but grab three or four from different lighting times of day. I tried this with shots of my backyard and got a way better green for a client's patio sign than any color picker tool gave me. The trick is zooming into the shadow areas too, not just the bright spots. Those darker tones end up being the most useful for text or borders.
