Hot take: I finally tried a 100% custom brush pack and it was a total mess

I always thought the default brushes in Procreate were fine, but after watching a tutorial from a concept artist in Austin, I bought a set for $15. My first piece looked muddy and weird because I had no idea how to control the pressure settings. Anyone have a good starter pack that isn't overwhelming?

Yeah, that "muddy and weird" look is so real. I got a free pack from a comic artist's newsletter that was just three brushes: a basic round, a flat, and a texture stamp. Sticking with just those for a week forced me to learn the pressure curve without getting lost in fifty options.

Wait, a whole week? Just three brushes? Man, that sounds like some kind of artist boot camp or something. I would have cracked on day two and gone digging through my whole library for that one brush that looks like a coffee stain. It's wild to think about limiting yourself like that on purpose, especially when you probably paid for a huge brush pack. But I guess it makes sense, you really have to figure out how hard to press and how fast to swipe when you can't just blame a bad line on the wrong brush setting.

Totally agree with that three brush method. Maybe even try just one brush for a whole piece to really force yourself to learn it.
