My old boss told me to never run the cutter head under 20 RPM in heavy clay, but I tried it on a job in Mobile Bay.

We were stuck for hours, and dropping to 15 RPM with more water pressure actually cleared the line in ten minutes. Who else has gotten advice that sounds right but just doesn't work on the ground?

Yeah, "advice that sounds right but doesn't work on the ground" is the story of my life sometimes.

Sometimes old advice is just outdated, not wrong. Your boss probably learned that rule on older equipment that couldn't handle the strain. Maybe the real lesson is knowing when a rule needs updating.
