I was using the wrong mud for my tape joints for years
I always used all-purpose for everything, even the first coat on my tape. A guy I was working with on a job in Tacoma last week asked me why I was making it so hard on myself. He showed me how much faster and smoother a lightweight mud goes on for that first coat. I switched for the rest of the job and it was a total game changer. Anyone else have a basic thing they were doing wrong for way too long?
My old foreman swore by all-purpose for the first coat too. He said the extra glue in it grabs the tape better and shrinks less. I tried it his way on a big ceiling job last year and had way fewer bubbles.
