Had to choose between a 200 amp panel upgrade or a subpanel for a new garage workshop
The homeowner in Springfield wanted to add a 60 amp circuit for a welder and some tools... I went with the subpanel because the main service was only 5 years old and it saved them about $1,200. Everything passed inspection yesterday and they were really happy with the extra space for future circuits. Anyone have a good rule of thumb for when you just bite the bullet and do the full upgrade instead?

Yeah, I read a good rule once that said if your main panel is over 80% full, you should just go for the upgrade. But if it's newer and you have the physical space, a subpanel makes total sense. You saved them a ton of money for the same result. I've seen guys push for the full upgrade just for the bigger job, but that's not always right for the homeowner. Your call was spot on since their service was practically new.

That 80% rule from @garcia.miles is a solid way to look at it. You made the right call saving them that cash on a new service.
