Warning: My freelance lunch break turned into a kitchen crisis
I tried to cook pasta during a client call and forgot the water, so it boiled over and set off the smoke alarm. The client thought I was in a disaster movie. What's your go-to easy meal when work gets crazy?

Pasta disasters are a rite of passage for sure. My smoke alarm went off last week from forgetting a pot of noodles. These days my go-to is just microwaving a packet of rice with some frozen veggies.

Oh man, I feel that deep in my soul. My smoke alarm is basically my kitchen timer at this point. There's something about boiling water that makes my brain just check out completely. Your rice packet move is smart though, it takes the whole "forgetting it on the stove" part out of the equation. I've been there with the charred pot bottom, and it's a special kind of defeat. Sometimes easy wins are the best ones, you know? Cooking is hard enough without adding fire alarms to the mix.

Glad I'm not the only one who burns water. My smoke alarm has a permanent spot in the kitchen because of my forgetfulness. Like @price.hayden said, microwave rice packs are a lifesaver. I've started using a timer on my phone for everything, even boiling water. It sounds silly, but it stops me from walking away and getting distracted. Now my pots last longer and the alarm stays quiet.
