PSA: Killed a motherboard by not double-checking standoff placement

I zipped up a new build for a client two weeks ago, a gaming rig with an AMD board. Everything looked perfect on the bench, but after powering it on, nothing but a black screen. Turns out I missed one extra standoff under the board that didn't line up with any hole, and it shorted out the back of the motherboard. Cost me a $180 replacement and a lot of embarrassment. Has anyone else had a simple assembly mistake wreck a board like that?

About three months ago, I picked up a cheap thermal camera that plugs into a phone. I thought it was a toy, but it changed how I find problems. Just got called out for my lazy coax terminations

A senior tech named Ray watched me rush a connector on a job in Tempe and said, 'You're leaving a quarter inch of braid exposed, kid. That's a moisture wick waiting to happen.' I started using his method of trimming the jacket back exactly 3/8 of an inch and folding the braid before crimping. Has anyone else had a simple critique that fixed a bad habit?

Tbh, I was reading a review of Fidelity's retirement tools last night and saw that taking a loan from your 401k can cost you over $100k in lost growth over 20 years. I had no idea the hit was that big. Has anyone else run the numbers on this and decided it's never worth it?
