Vent: I don't buy the idea that thicker batts always mean better insulation

That example you gave of the house with good air sealing but thin attic insulation is exactly what I'm worried about with my own place. When you saw that heat loss last winter, was it mainly because the insulation itself just wasn't enough to handle the temperature difference? What R-value did they end up needing to add to actually fix the problem, in your experience?

Just realized writing prompts aren't just for fiction...

Actually, something that worked for me was using prompts to argue with myself. Like, try a prompt that says 'write about a belief you once held that was completely wrong.' It forces you to dig into the why, not just the what happened. You end up tracking how your mind changed, which is pure non-fiction gold. That messy middle of changing your view is where the real story lives.

The time I refused to sign off on a sketchy patch job

Honestly, @terrymurray, that gut feeling stuff can be a real problem sometimes. Procedures and checklists exist for a reason, to take personal doubt out of the equation. Holding up a job because of a vibe, without hard proof something is wrong, costs a ton of money and messes up schedules for everyone. That pressure from bosses and flight schedules is real, and sometimes you have to trust the manual over a bad feeling in your stomach. The NTSB reports are full of crashes where people followed a hunch instead of the book. Sticking strictly to the written standard is the only safe bet.

Just realized my cat thinks my morning sun salutations are an invitation

Yeah it's like pets have this radar for when you're trying to do something focused... my dog always takes my work calls as his cue to start barking at squirrels.
