Took me 2 years to realize I was chasing the wrong KPIs entirely

I had a client in Chicago cancel their contract and straight up told me 'your reports look great but our phone never rings.' That's when I figured out I was measuring impressions and clicks when they just wanted leads. Anyone else had a client show you what actually matters?

$2500 a month for six months of "optimization" before I figured out none of it mattered. I used to think traffic was the only thing that counted, but watching someone cancel over a quiet phone changed my mind fast. Now I ask every client what their actual win looks like before I even open a dashboard.

Did you ever go back and ask that client what made them sign up in the first place? I had a similar wakeup call when a realtor told me she just wanted her phone to ring with people asking about open houses. Now I always start with a 15 minute call where the client literally describes their perfect day at work. Then I build my reporting around THAT specific outcome instead of general metrics. It saves everyone a lot of headaches when you figure out early if they care about brand awareness or actual sales.
