Hit 9 clients on retainer this week and it scares me more than when I had 2
Just crossed 9 retainer clients at the shop. Two-person team, me and a part timer. 9 monthly checks sounded like the dream 6 months ago. Now I am the bottleneck on every account and I keep missing small things. Realized my whole system is just a giant spreadsheet and my memory. So do I hire a third person and eat the margin hit for a quarter? Or do I raise prices and cut the two smallest accounts loose? Curious what number made other owners finally change how they run things.
The "giant spreadsheet and my memory" line hit me hard because that was me at 7 clients, dropping the ball on little stuff until one almost walked. I hired the third person and ate the margin hit, it hurt for about two months but got me out of being the bottleneck on every single account.
