I finally fired a client last Tuesday and my whole week flipped
We were 3 weeks behind on their retainer stuff and every check-in turned into a 90 minute call where nothing got decided. Tuesday I did the math and they were eating up 40% of my hours for 12% of revenue, so I sent the breakup email at 8am. By Thursday I had room to fix a landing page issue for another account that had been bugging me for a month, and my whole team actually seemed less tense. Honestly I should have done it back in January. For those of you running small shops, do you have a real cutoff number for when an account stops making sense?
Oh man, my friend Dana went through this exact thing last year. She kept this one client around for almost two years because the guy was "loyal" (her word, not mine) even though he called her every single day with some new emergency. She finally added up the hours in a spreadsheet and it came out to like 30% of her week for 8% of her money, and she felt sick when she saw the numbers. After she cut him loose she told me it was like someone turned the volume down in her whole life. Her only regret was waiting so long to actually look at the math. So yeah, having a real cutoff number helps, but the hard part is being honest enough to run the numbers in the first place.
