My old boss said to fire the client who haggled over $200 and I thought he was nuts
Six months ago a guy with a landscaping company wanted me to build his site for $1,800 and kept pushing me down to $1,600, then asked if I could do payments. I was slow that month so I took it. My old boss ran a three person shop out of Sacramento and always said the ones who fight you on price fight you on everything else. He was dead right. That client sent me 31 emails in the first two weeks, wanted a phone call every other day, and asked for revision rounds on things we already signed off on. I ended up putting in maybe 60 hours on a job that should have taken 15, so the real rate was under $30 an hour. I finally handed him off to a cheaper freelancer and ate the loss just to get my evenings back. Now I quote flat and if they push more than once I walk, and my close rate on the ones who stay is way higher. Anybody else got a number in their head where a lowball client stops being worth the cash?
