Been told AI voice cloning was unethical, but it helped my mom in Pittsburgh

My mom has MS and lost her ability to speak clearly last year. A developer friend used a small sample of her old voicemails to create an AI voice for her tablet. Critics say this tech is creepy or fake, but for our family it gave her back her personality. Has anyone else found a human use for AI that people usually complain about?

Sympathize with you completely. Watched my dad go through something similar after his stroke. The machine voice they gave him sounded nothing like him, it was robotic and flat. Took away the last bit of personality he had left. If AI can give someone back their voice, their actual voice, I don't see how that's unethical. It's not like you're using it to scam people or fake something. It's just letting your mom sound like herself again. People get caught up in the tech without thinking about real human situations like yours.

That's rough, sorry you and your dad went through that.
