My neighbor saw my air fryer basket and said I was doing it wrong

I was making chicken wings and he pointed out I had them all piled in the middle, which he said blocks the hot air from moving around. He told me to always spread them out in a single layer, even if it means cooking in two batches. How many of you actually do this for everything, or is it just for certain foods?

He's right about the single layer, but honestly, I just shake the basket halfway through. It moves them around enough.

Shaking the basket just doesn't do the same job. It moves the top ones but the ones on the bottom stay stuck. You really need to pull them out and flip each piece by hand for even cooking. That single layer rule exists for a reason.
